COLLEGIATE RESEARCH PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES
The Franke Collegiate Research Program in Humanities is a new program that provides opportunities for undergraduates to gain skills in humanistic research. It hosts the College’s annual Summer Institute and matches UChicago undergrads with Franke Residential Fellows, recipients of Franke Faculty Research Grants and other Franke-funded projects to work as paid research assistants. In 2021, students have worked on the history of early Black cinema in Chicago, performing archival work at the Chicago Film Archive and identifying historic shooting locations around the city, helped to develop educational transmedia games in public schools on the South Side of Chicago, and used satellite data to assist in the documentation and salvage of cultural heritage in Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover of that country.
